A Disappointment of Tropical Proportions
As San Diego braces for its first Tropical Storm in 80 years, one must be mindful of how serious this event is. The storm is probably nothing to worry about - I don't think that's the problem here. No, the graveness of the situation lies not in the tempest which imminently threatens our coastal gem of a city - it's the lines at Costco I'm more concerned about.
The local Costco was absurdly busy today. It seems that most of the population has agreed that Hurricane Hilary is indeed the End of the World, and as such, they need more toilet paper and fruit snacks to take with them into the afterlife.
The Costco employees did a good job of managing the chaos. Costco employees seem to be a degree or two better than other big retail workers, something which I attribute to Costco's optimal use of the 80/20 rule. Target employees, for example, spend most of their time wandering aimlessly around the store, and one would think that they don't really have a good grasp on what it is they are supposed to be doing. Costco employees, on the other hand, also seem to not understand what they are doing; but since there are about 20% more things going on in Costco which they do not understand, it seems they are 80% better.
